Why can’t ford build a mechanically sound car?
They have great platforms, but shit powertrains. Like the opposite of Chevy

Chevy pulls the plug once they get it right.

Article because it seems to get off and on Kinja’d:
And it’s not even a new problem. I see so many Fords made in the past two decades with engines in good shape but trashed transmissions. Stuff like “reverse doesn’t work” or “no first gear” or “no overdrive” and so on.
If my Ranger eats its transmission (like my friend’s Ranger of the same year, trim, engine, and trans), my next will definitely be a manual. Thankfully mine has far more miles than his so I hope it soldiers on like TheBicycleBuck’s Mazda did.

I feel like modern cars are now so complicated that there are way too many points of failure. Especially when it comes to modern cars built by a company like Ford that historically has not been so great at properly designing and assembling reliable vehicles.

Cars are lasting longer than ever. I think quality expectations have just gotten higher. We gone from times when making it to 100k miles was considered exceptional durability, to feeling like cars that don’t make it there are embarrassing lemons.

Well there’s that too. What I mean is whole overall quality and reliability is definitely better, there are so many more little, or not-so-little, things in cars now that can go wrong and cause serious issues.

our explorer is on its 2nd transmission, and my first car, a 98 contour had gone through 3 trans rebuilds before it finally gave up the ghost. ford doesnt know how to build a trans, which is why i was hoping with the 10 speed co-designed with chevy that things would get better

My FCA experiences, though limited, have generally been good platforms, good powertrains, shit sheet metal. They all seem to run good, handle good, pretty mechanically reliable, they are just rust buckets and the interiors fall apart, rendering them unusable as a car.

I
hated
my 2012
WK2, and I grew to love it as my ownership ended, but I have two conclusions about that thing:
1. There was always a problem with the car, suspension, steering, squeaks and rattles, water intrusion, electronics etc. Even though the WK2 is an evolution of the WK, and it was designed with Mercedes ... It should’ve been perfect, but it sucked when it first started. Nowadays, the new WK2 are very good cars...but it took them years to get it sort of right.
2. The powertrain, I loved the 5.7 when it worked, and I grew to understand the 5 speed box’.... But OMG, how did Chrysler make an unreliable pushrod engine? There’s almost merit in fucking up so bad. It would overheat, it would break every sensor, use a ton of oil, and it would be terrible, OH SO TERRIBLE on gas.
I think FCA has very good platform ideas but they don’t execute them that well, and by being sort of the left-of-field of the big three they get away with some ludicrous products but they really need to work on consistent quality issues and sometimes even bad design .

For what it’s worth, my experience with FCA was a few old K-cars my dad had as company cars, a Dodge Colt that my mom drove when I was a kid, and I had an 01 Ram. So everything was pre-Fiat, and in fact mostly pre-Diamler. Maybe Diamler and Fiat have fixed the rust issues and turned them back around to at least having somewhat normal car problems. I just remember on all those cars rust was an issue. I bought my 01 Ram in 07 and ended up uncovering more rust than my folks 86 GMC had at the same time.

Laughs in Alpha. Also, the late F-body. Actually, screw it , GM makes fairly decent, sometimes excellent RWD platforms, let down by a few weak links.

With the Lx-bodies, its great platform, great powertrain, mediocre paint.
